A constitutional amendment that came into effect on Saturday formally defines male and female as the only biologically recognized sexes in Slovakia. The amendment also guarantees equal pay for men and women performing the same work.
The changes, approved by parliament on September 26, address several social and ethical issues, including child adoption and education. The government says the goal is to strengthen Slovakia’s sovereignty in matters of values and cultural ethics.
The Constitution now also bans surrogacy, stating that agreements to give birth to a child for another person are prohibited. It further clarifies that a child’s parents are a mother — defined as a woman — and a father — defined as a man.
