Slovakia Strengthens Its Voice in Sustainable Forest Management

Slovakia has been elected to chair the European Forestry Commission of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for the next two years. Member states unanimously chose Slovak forestry expert Boris Greguška from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development as the new chair during their meeting in Istanbul. Agriculture Minister Richard Takáč (Smer-SD) called the appointment a major success, saying it proves Slovakia’s strong reputation in sustainable forest management and international expertise. The session focused on innovation in forestry, bioeconomy, and forest protection—especially against wildfires. Founded in 1947, the Commission brings together 41 countries and the EU. Slovakia is taking the chairmanship for only the second time in history.
