Slovak President Peter Pellegrini will attend UNESCO's highest forum for the first time, the aim of which is to strengthen peace through education and culture. On Wednesday, he will travel to Samarkand, Uzbekistan, where he will attend the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference. The President will also be accompanied by Education Minister Tomáš Drucker (Hlas-SD).
The main topics of this year's session include the initiative of UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay "Education for Peace", which aims to strengthen the role of education as an instrument of peace. The meeting is also of particular importance in the context of the 80th anniversary of UNESCO's founding. At the same time, the conference is moving outside of Paris after 40 years. It is intended to emphasize the exceptional position of Central Asia as a place where cultures, traditions and ideas meet.
The President will attend the official opening of the conference on Thursday (October 30), and on Friday (October 31) he will speak at the beginning of the general political debate. "Slovakia, as a member of the UNESCO Executive Board, will also present itself as an active contributor to decision-making in the areas of education, ethics of artificial intelligence, protection of cultural heritage and support for multilateralism and will highlight our long-term and professional contribution to the organization's activities," said the President’s communication department.
The Head of State will hold several bilateral meetings, including with the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev and the Director-General of UNESCO. In Samarkand, he will also visit the RedBridge international school, led by the Slovak director Lucia Ščipová. The working trip will conclude with a joint performance by the Slovak folklore ensemble Lúčnica and the Uzbek state ensemble Bakhor in the premises of the Samarkand Theater of Music and Drama.
