Government Meets in Šurany to Discuss Battery Factory

Slovakia’s government is holding its latest off-site meeting today in the town of Šurany, in the Nitra region, where construction of a major battery factory – often called a “gigafactory” – is about to begin. The cabinet will discuss the progress of the Šurany Industrial Park project, followed by a ceremonial groundbreaking for the plant.

The Slovak-Chinese company Gotion InoBat Batteries plans to invest about 1.25 billion euros, creating around 1,300 jobs and producing up to 60 million battery cells annually. However, not everyone supports the project — local activists have gathered more than 17,000 signatures against the investment, citing environmental concerns, and plan to protest near the construction site during the government visit.
