Slovakia Records Sharpest Rule-of-Law Decline in EU

Slovakia has recorded the sharpest drop among EU countries in the latest World Justice Project Rule of Law Index. The country fell by 2.3 percent year-on-year, ranking 36th out of 143 countries worldwide with a score of 0.64 out of 1. The report cites a decline in limits on government power, judicial independence, transparency, and civil rights.

Globally, the rule of law weakened in 68 percent of countries, with the World Justice Project blaming growing authoritarian tendencies. Within the EU, Slovakia now ranks 26th out of 31, ahead of Greece, Bulgaria, and Hungary. Denmark topped the global index, while Venezuela ranked last.
