Slovakia Warns Planned Use of Russian Assets Could Backfire

Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) warned that the EU’s plan to use frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine could “end in failure.” He said after the European Council meeting in Brussels that he succeeded in removing the word “confiscation” from the summit’s statement on Ukraine. He added that he asked the European Commission to find alternative financing options for Kyiv.

“The government I lead will never sign any guarantee for Ukraine’s military loans, nor spend a single cent from our state budget for that purpose,” Fico declared. According to him, the proposal carries risks of violating international law and provoking Russian retaliation. He said the EU should instead focus on a “realistic peace plan for Ukraine.”
