Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) is in Brussels for a European Council summit focused on Ukraine, defense, energy prices, and migration. Before the meeting, Fico said the EU should support a planned Trump–Putin summit in Budapest, arguing that peace requires direct talks, not new sanctions. He also plans to meet German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to discuss energy costs and the automotive industry. Fico added that Slovakia will push for the EU to react more firmly to rising energy prices and protect European competitiveness. The summit continues through Friday, alongside a meeting of eurozone leaders.
