Renowned visual artist Milan Dobeš passed away on October 17 at the age of 96. He was a leading figure in Czechoslovak visual arts in the second half of the 20th century and gained international recognition for introducing optical and kinetic art to Slovak culture. Born in Přerov in 1929, Dobeš studied at VŠVU in Bratislava and worked as a stage designer until 1960. His work includes light-kinetic installations, architectural objects, and optical-kinetic serigraphs, with pieces displayed worldwide, including the USA, Japan, Argentina, Uruguay, and Germany. Notable Slovak installations include Bratislava’s Hotel Kyjev and the Dom techniky. A memorial service will take place on October 27 at 14:45 in the Bratislava crematorium. Dobeš’s legacy includes the Milan Dobeš Museum and major retrospectives at the Slovak National Gallery and the Muzeum umění Olomouc.
