More than fifty human rights and civic organizations from Slovakia and across Europe are calling on the European Commission to take legal and political action over Slovakia’s recent constitutional amendment. The groups — including Amnesty International Slovakia — say the changes represent an unprecedented step backward for human rights, limiting legal recognition for transgender and non-binary people and threatening reproductive rights. In an open letter to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, they urged the EU to launch infringement proceedings and even consider freezing EU funds if the Slovak government fails to reverse the changes. The amendment, approved in September and signed by President Peter Pellegrini, formally defines only two genders — male and female — starting November 1.
