Parliament Continues Budget Debate

MPs opened Wednesday's 40th parliamentary session with the government's draft bill on the state budget for 2026. In total, more than 50 MPs have signed up for the debate in writing, and others can still do so orally.

This year, the budget is being discussed earlier than usual. Traditionally, it is only approved at the last session of Parliament at the turn of November and December. This year, MPs must do so earlier, otherwise the government would have to submit a balanced budget to parliament due to the end of the exemption from the debt break.

According to the budget draft, the public finance deficit should reach 4.1 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) next year, or just under six billion euros. It should thus fall by five percent of GDP from this year's expected level. Total general government budget revenues for 2026 are projected at 62 billion euros, representing 43 percent of GDP. Expenditures should reach 67.9 billion euros, or 47.1 percent of GDP.
