Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico says he sees no reason for an early parliamentary election. Speaking at his party’s working congress in Bratislava on Saturday, Fico emphasized that passing next year’s state budget is key to maintaining political stability.
He also proposed moving municipal and regional elections to 2027, aiming to align them with the general election. Fico called on local government associations to consider the idea, saying parliament could pass the necessary laws if there is consensus.
However, the Union of Slovak Cities and the Association of Towns and Municipalities disagree. Their leaders say officials were elected for four years, and the public expects that term to be respected. They are preparing a position paper advocating for a five-year term starting in 2030.
Political science expert Jozef Lenč warns that extending local officials’ terms without amending the constitution would challenge democratic principles.
