Fico Warns EU Car Ban Could Harm Slovak Industry

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) says his government will push for a review of the European Union’s planned 2035 ban on combustion-engine cars.

Fico plans to ask Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to convene a V4 meeting on the issue before the next European Council session later this month. He also wants EU leaders to open broader talks on the future and sustainability of Europe’s car industry. Fico noted that the auto sector makes up ten percent of Slovakia’s GDP and employs more than 300,000 people directly and indirectly. He warned that any negative shift in production would be disastrous for the country.

Economy Minister Denisa Saková added that Slovakia is expanding charging infrastructure, though industry leaders say consumers are still not ready for full electric mobility.
