European Commission Warns Slovakia Lagging in Green Energy Transition

The European Commission has assessed that Slovakia is on track to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but is falling behind in carbon removal through soil and forests. It also urged the country to cut dependence on coal and gas and to better connect its energy networks. While Slovakia has slightly raised its ambitions in renewables and efficiency, the real challenge lies in implementation.

At the same time, Slovakia ranks last in the EU in electricity production from renewable sources. The main reason is low water flow in hydropower plants, which remain the country’s key renewable energy source. Analysts warn that measures proposed by Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba could further slowdown the shift to clean energy.
