Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Robert Kaliňák (Smer-SD) discussed the possibilities of developing bilateral cooperation in the field of defense during a meeting with his Polish counterpart Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz in Warsaw on Tuesday evening (September 30).
The main topics of the meeting were the construction of the so-called anti-drone wall, cooperation between the defense industries of the Slovak Republic and Poland and the development of their capabilities, said Kosiniak-Kamysz. "Effective regional cooperation and reliable allies guarantee our secure future," he added.
Discussions on drone protection on the EU's eastern flank have intensified after recent violations of Polish and Romanian airspace by Russian drones, as well as the sighting of drones over Denmark. Russian fighter jets also briefly violated Estonian airspace.
Representatives of Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine and finally Hungary discussed the initiative, presented by European Commissioner for Defence Andrius Kubilius, on Friday (26 September). EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas was also present. The initiative is expected to be discussed at an informal meeting of EU leaders in Copenhagen, Denmark, on Wednesday, which will be attended by Slovak PM Robert Fico (Smer-SD).
Following the government meeting on Wednesday Kaliňák announced that Slovakia wants to present its own model for a drone wall on NATO's eastern flank at Wednesday's informal summit.
Concerning the question of further financial support for Ukraine and Slovakia's position to this issue, he referred to Premier Robert Fico's (Smer-SD) power to comment on this topic.
Kaliňák also announced that he will visit Ukraine on Sunday. He informed that his trip is related to the planned joint negotiations between the governments of Slovakia and Ukraine.
