The first Robotic Surgery Center for Pediatric Patients in Slovakia was officially opened at the National Institute of Pediatric Diseases (NUDCH) in Bratislava on Tuesday. The opening was attended by Minister of Health Kamil Šaško (Hlas-SD) and Deputy Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic for the Recovery Plan and Knowledge Economy Peter Kmec (Hlas-SD).
Hospital Director Peter Bartoň explained that NUDCH thus became the second workplace in Central Europe and one of six workplaces in all of Europe with a robotic surgery center for pediatric patients. "I am very happy that after many months of demanding preparations and training of specialists, we have managed to successfully operate on the first pediatric patients with robotic-assisted mini-invasive surgery.
According to experts, the construction of the workplace will bring a significant change for patients. "Robotic surgery opens up new possibilities and brings many benefits for both patients and staff. For example, 3D vision with a tenfold magnification of the operating field using a robotic console. The surgeon can see things in detail that he could not see with previous systems. He operates much more sensitively, more delicately and more precisely and with less interference with surrounding tissues, which leads to minimal blood loss and faster recovery of patients. Robotic instruments, unlike classic laparoscopic instruments, have joints, which allows for better maneuverability, increases their range of motion in the abdominal cavity, and thus achieves greater efficiency and reduces operating time," explained Igor Béder, Deputy Director for Treatment and Preventive Care at the National Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The Minister of Health emphasized that this is a significant medical success, but also a huge step for young patients. “A big thank you goes to the doctors and operating teams who use modern technologies for our pediatric patients,” he said.
The project was financed from the renewal plan, with 3.5 million euros allocated for it.
