President Backs Law Prioritizing Slovak Legislation Over EU Standards

President Peter Pellegrini announced that he will not refer the constitutional amendment to the Constitutional Court of the Slovak Republic. He will sign it upon delivery, even though he does not have to, as it was supported by 90 members of parliament. He stated this in a discussion program on Slovak Radio called Saturday Dialogues. At the same time, he claims that most MPs do not consider the constitutional amendment to be a threat to the rule of law. According to him, this was confirmed by the broad support in parliament. He does not perceive it as a threat either.

However, according to the head of state, the Slovak government must answer the question of whether it has defended or failed to defend the passages on the supremacy of Slovak legislation over European legislation in certain value issues before international organizations that could sanction Slovakia. However, he believes that the government will defend its position in this matter.
