Slovakia’s Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD) held a series of bilateral and multilateral meetings on the side lines of the UN General Assembly in New York. At an informal EU–CELAC gathering — CELAC being the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States — he praised the partnership with Latin American and Caribbean nations, stressing that stronger trade and political ties are vital for global stability. He also confirmed that Prime Minister Robert Fico will lead Slovakia’s delegation to the EU–CELAC summit in Colombia this November.
Blanár joined EU colleagues for talks on the Western Balkans, underlining Slovakia’s strong backing for their EU membership ambitions. Enlargement, he said, is a key tool for European stability and security, with Slovakia among the strongest supporters of Balkan integration.
On the side lines, Blanár met Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, reiterating that the war in Ukraine has no military solution and requires diplomacy. He also discussed expanding cooperation with Ghana, pointing to Slovakia’s new honorary consulate in Accra and seeking Ghana’s support for a future UN Security Council seat.
