EU Foreign Ministers Hold Talks with Global Partners in New York

Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár (SMER-SD) joined his EU counterparts Monday for an informal meeting in New York, held alongside the UN General Assembly. The talks brought together EU ministers with partners from Brazil, India, and Mexico to discuss global conflicts, crises, and ways to strengthen cooperation.

Blanár stressed the importance of dialogue with key international players and underlined Slovakia’s readiness to contribute as a candidate for a UN Security Council seat in 2028–2029. He reiterated that peace in Ukraine must be based on international law and the UN Charter, rejecting any change of borders by force.

Ministers also addressed the Middle East, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and more humanitarian aid. Blanár highlighted Slovakia’s contributions, including financial support, relief supplies, and medical evacuations of children. He also signed the UN Declaration on the Protection of Humanitarian Workers, calling it a moral duty to safeguard those risking their lives.

On the sidelines, Blanár also met Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha to discuss European security, defense cooperation through the SAFE instrument, and energy issues. They also prepared the next Slovak-Ukrainian government meeting set for October in Michalovce.
