Parliament Opens Debate on Third Austerity Measures Package

Slovak MPs return to parliament this week, starting Tuesday, to continue the 39th session, with debate on the government’s third austerity measures package (known as consolidation) high on the agenda. Finance Minister Ladislav Kamenický (SMER-SD) has outlined 22 measures aimed at saving money and boosting revenues, expected to bring in 2.7 billion euros. The package, debated in fast-track procedure, focuses on changes affecting companies, municipalities, and citizens, while savings within ministries are not yet included. Lawmakers will also vote on amendments, such as freezing MPs’ salaries and rules on holiday shopping. A final decision on the package is expected during the current session.

Meanwhile, the Confederation of Trade Unions has announced a protest gathering in Bratislava on September 30. Union leaders warned that workers should not repeatedly bear the heaviest burden of government decisions.
