European Parliament Reviews Rule of Law and EU Funds Oversight in Slovakia

Slovakia was discussed in the European Parliament (EP). MEPs spoke in plenary about the state of the rule of law and suspicions of misuse of EU funds. The European Commission (EC) offered mild praise as well as criticism. The debate was preceded by visits from European Parliament delegations. The Slovak government disagrees with the accusations.

"Slovakia has aligned itself with the EC's proposals, which we highlighted in our 2024 report. This is a positive step. However, the 2025 report raises concerns about several reforms and changes, such as the abolition of the National Criminal Agency and the Special Prosecutor's Office, which has led to delays in several corruption cases," said European Commissioner for Democracy and the Rule of Law Michael McGrath.

A situation similar to that in Hungary and Poland, where EU funds were frozen, does not currently threaten Slovakia.

"The Slovak government currently has no dispute with the EC regarding compliance with the rule of law, and as far as compliance with structural funds is concerned, I am convinced that if there are any violations, all the cases that have been reported in Slovakia will be investigated and, if necessary, criminal liability will be pursued," said MEP Monika Beňová.

"These are EC supervisory bodies such as the European Public Prosecutor's Office and OLAF. They are all looking into specific cases in Slovakia and investigating them. The ball is now in Slovakia's court, as there will be clear recommendations that need to be implemented. So far, there is a positive approach to rectifying these issues and ensuring that they function as they should," added MEP Michal Wiezik.

The Slovak government rejects the European Parliament's audit mission findings. The EP will return to the topic of EU funds in October. The Committee on Budgetary Control is preparing a public hearing dedicated to Slovakia.
