Slovak Leaders Highlight Diplomacy After Fico-Zelenskyy Meeting

President Peter Pellegrini described Friday’s meeting in Uzhhorod between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico as highly significant, calling it a discussion between the top executive leaders of two neighboring countries. He stressed that maintaining strong relations with neighbors must remain a cornerstone of Slovakia’s foreign policy, adding that any tensions should be resolved through open dialogue at the negotiating table.

Following the talks near Uzhhorod, Economy Minister Denisa Saková (Hlas) announced that Slovakia and Ukraine will continue to develop cooperation in the energy sector, focusing on areas where both countries share common interests.

Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok (Hlas) also commented on the meeting, writing on social media that Friday’s talks between Fico and Zelenskyy demonstrated the indispensable role of communication and constructive dialogue in both domestic and foreign policy, even when the parties hold differing views.

The opposition Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) expressed hope that the meeting would pave the way for closer relations with Ukraine as Slovakia’s neighbor and strategic partner.

Former Foreign Minister Ivan Korčok (PS) welcomed the meeting but criticized Prime Minister Fico for not explicitly condemning Russian aggression during the joint press conference with President Zelenskyy.
