The Group of States against Corruption, GRECO, has urged Slovakia to step up efforts to fight corruption and strengthen the integrity of its police force.
According to a Council of Europe press release on Thursday, Slovakia has fully implemented only five of the 21 recommendations made back in 2019. Four recommendations have been partly implemented, while 12 remain untouched.
GRECO emphasised the need for stricter rules on lobbying, asset declarations, integrity checks, post-employment restrictions, and whistle-blower protections. It also expressed concern last month over fast-track laws and reduced penalties for corruption.
Now classified as insufficiently compliant, Slovakia must report on its progress to GRECO by the end of June next year.
