Members of the European Parliament, together with the Commission and Danish Presidency, will debate Slovakia’s rule of law and potential misuse of EU funds next Wednesday in Strasbourg.
The debate comes amid concerns that recent legal changes could affect media freedom, transparency for NGOs, and anti-corruption measures. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico’s (Smer-SD) recent trips to Moscow and Beijing, and their impact on the EU’s common foreign and security policy, may also be discussed, according to a European Parliament briefing.
Earlier this year, European Parliament delegations on Budgetary Control and Civil Liberties visited Slovakia and raised concerns over threats to democracy, EU values, and alleged misuse of EU funds. No resolution is expected from the debate, which is part of a routine review of member states’ governance.
