Prime Minister Criticises EU Absence at Beijing WWII Commemorations

Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) has criticised the absence of European leaders at commemorations in Beijing marking the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Speaking in a video message, he said the event, which ended with a military parade, was “globally significant” and that it was the EU, not China, that ended up isolated.

During his two-day visit to Beijing, Fico also met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and said he plans to brief Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on that meeting this Friday. Yesterday, Prime Minister Fico held talks with leaders including the presidents of Vietnam and Serbia, and agreed with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to pursue a joint meeting on trade relations and the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Today, the Prime Minister is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping before returning home to prepare for talks in Uzhhorod with President Zelenskyy and Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliya Svyrydenko.
