The Ministry of Tourism and Sport is preparing to cut around €16 million as part of government austerity measures. Tourism Minister Rudolf Huliak (The Rural Party) announced that savings would come from staff reductions and moving to cheaper offices. He added that the final plan should be agreed with Finance Minister Ladislav Kamenický (Smer-SD) later this week and discussed at Sunday’s coalition council meeting.
Huliak also said that higher territorial units (VÚC) are unnecessarily duplicative and should eventually be abolished. However, he stressed that funding for the Tourism and Sports Supports Fund will not be affected.
At the same time, the ministry has launched a new €19 million call for proposals to support tourism and the spa industry, including retroactive funding for initiatives started since April. Eligible applicants can receive a maximum subsidy of half a million euro.
