Unemployment in Slovakia Slightly Up, Still Near Record Lows

Slovakia’s unemployment rate rose slightly in the second quarter of 2025, reaching 5.3 percent, up by 1,700 people year-on-year. According to the Statistical Office, a total of 144,500 people were without work, still among the lowest levels since 2021. Long-term unemployed made up 62 percent, while nearly one-third were people who have never worked, mostly under 34.
Regional disparities remain: unemployment ranged from just 2.1 percent in Bratislava to 10.6 percent in Prešov. The biggest year-on-year increases were in Banská Bystrica and Nitra regions, while Bratislava saw the sharpest decline. Despite the uptick, unemployment in Slovakia has stayed below six percent for the past two years.
