The opposition Progressive Slovakia (PS) party is pushing for an amendment that would extend the right to vote from abroad to include presidential elections. MPs Lucia Plaváková and Zuzana Mesterová (both PS) submitted the proposal, citing growing interest among Slovaks living abroad in having a say in presidential elections. The proposal comes after a record level of participation in the most recent parliamentary elections, where nearly 73,000 Slovaks from over 130 countries applied to vote by post, with 80.5% of them casting their votes.
“Of those, almost 59,000 actually cast their votes – representing 80.5 percent of those registered," they added. Compared to almost 49,000 postal votes cast in the 2020 parliamentary elections, the number increased by 20.1 percent.
