Slovakia has joined a group of 26 countries calling on Israel to allow independent journalists into the Gaza Strip. The appeal was made by members of the Media Freedom Coalition, a partnership of 51 countries promoting press freedom.
The statement stressed that journalists play a key role in uncovering the devastating reality of war and condemned violence, detentions, and deaths of media workers. Signatories urged Israeli authorities and all parties to ensure the safety of journalists in Gaza, Israel, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem.
The coalition also called for an immediate ceasefire, the unconditional release of hostages held by Hamas, and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid. 17 of the 27 signatories are EU countries, including Slovakia, Austria, Germany, and France. Other countries include the United Kingdom, Japan, and Australia.
