The Slovak government approved a new Higher Education Act on Wednesday, aimed at modernising universities and improving opportunities for students and teachers.
The law gives students more flexible ways to complete their studies, including combining different forms of education and having credits recognised from other programs. Students can also choose to complete a final internship instead of a thesis, gaining practical experience in a work environment. University professors will benefit from new sabbatical options and extended employment possibilities.
Education Minister Tomáš Drucker (Voice-SD) said the law reflects the needs of the modern era, helping students graduate faster and aligning curricula with labour market demands. Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) expressed full support for the reforms.
Discussion of other education laws, including school financing, was paused and will continue at a government meeting on Friday.
