Slovakia’s Ministry of Tourism and Sport has proposed a modest increase in the gambling levy by one percentage point to 28%, warning that a higher rate would destabilize the betting market and push players toward illegal online casinos. Minister Rudolf Huliak also announced plans to amend the Gambling Act to allow state-owned Tipos to operate self-service lottery terminals and open land-based casinos, while establishing a betting industry chamber led by Tipos.
Opposition party KDH strongly criticized the proposal, calling it insufficient and socially harmful. They demand at least a 10% tax increase, arguing that the current plan protects large gambling operators at the expense of public welfare. KDH also called for a special levy and fairer taxation to fund addiction prevention, family support, and social aid.
