EU Approves Slovakia-US Nuclear Energy Cooperation

The European Commission has raised no objections to the agreement between Slovakia and the United States on cooperation in the field of nuclear energy. Economy Minister Denisa Saková (Voice–SD) announced the news on social media Wednesday, confirming full compliance with EU atomic energy regulations.

According to Saková, the agreement aims to create a stable framework for cooperation in research, nuclear safety, innovation, investment, and knowledge transfer to support Slovakia’s plans for a new nuclear power plant.

On Tuesday, representatives of the Economy Ministry met with US Ambassador Gautam A. Rana to discuss further strengthening bilateral economic cooperation.

Westinghouse, which is set to lead the project, says the country’s existing nuclear infrastructure gives it a strong foundation. Company president for Czechia and Slovakia, Petr Brzezina, noted that educational programs for students are also in development to help train a new generation of nuclear technicians.

Brzezina emphasised that the reactor design is complete and welcomed the agreement for securing political support for deploying American nuclear technology. Ambassador Rana confirmed the agreement’s near-final status.
