President Rejects All Requests to Serve in Foreign Armed Forces

President Peter Pellegrini has rejected all applications from Slovak citizens seeking to serve in the armed forces of a foreign state. Since taking office, he has received seven such requests, the President’s Office told TASR on Tuesday.

Since July 2024, six Slovaks have requested permission to join the armed forces of Ukraine, with one request filed to serve in Russia.

President Pellegrini said the decisions reflect his pledge not to allow service in foreign armies involved in conflicts. He stressed that Slovakia, as an EU and NATO member state, supports peaceful solutions grounded in international law. Under Slovak law, the president must approve any service in foreign armed forces after consultation with relevant ministries.
