Coalition Partner and Opposition Criticize Energy Subsidy Plan

Coalition partner and SNS party leader Andrej Danko (SNS) warned that keeping household energy prices stable through state subsidies is unsustainable, as the government is borrowing to cover the costs. He was reacting to PM Robert Fico’s announcement that 90% of households will see no price increase in 2026.

According to the Council for Budget Responsibility (RRZ), such subsidies could force the government to cut an additional €440 million in its next fiscal consolidation package. Fico (Smer-SD) has therefore announced the start of intensive negotiations with the European Commission on using EU funds to finance the compensation.

The opposition SaS party criticized the plan as wasteful and called for targeted support instead of broad subsidies—highlighting that even wealthier households benefit, for example, by heating their pools with subsidized energy. In contrast, several EU countries apply targeted models, where households pay market prices but receive social compensation, such as housing allowances, based on income or energy burden.
