Slovakia has regained full control of the public ports in Bratislava and Komárno after years of ownership disputes, paving the way for long-awaited modernization efforts, Transport Minister Jozef Ráž (Smer-SD nominee) announced. The state purchased key infrastructure—including cranes, warehouses, and buildings—from the company Slovenská plavba a prístavy for €170 million.
The agreement guarantees the state an annual income of €6.5 million over the next five years through a leaseback arrangement. In Bratislava, plans include the modernization of the container terminal in Pálenisko and the expansion of the shipyard, with the goal of tripling current cargo capacity. A new urban district is also set to rise in the Winter Harbor area, in cooperation with the Metropolitan Institute of Bratislava, with construction expected to begin after 2030.
The port of Komárno—Slovakia’s second most significant—also returns to state management. Officials hope that unified ownership will attract investment and transform the aging port into a modern logistics hub, revitalizing the southern region.
