UK Denies PM Fico’s Election Meddling Claim

The UK has firmly rejected Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico’s accusation that it interfered in Slovakia’s 2023 election. Fico had threatened to raise the issue with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and other EU leaders.

The British Embassy in Slovakia issued a strong denial.

“Any claim that the United Kingdom sought to influence the outcome of the election or promote any particular political party is completely untrue,” said embassy spokesperson Monika Holečková, as quoted by Aktuality.sk.

She added that the UK’s activities were solely aimed at encouraging youth participation in democratic processes, regardless of political preference.

On Tuesday, Fico claimed the British government had funded journalists, activists, and influencers to sway public opinion against his party, Smer-SD, and in favor of the opposition Progressive Slovakia. He cited a 16 July article by the investigative outlet Declassified UK as evidence.
