The police are investigating possible attempts to influence the situation ahead of the Slovak elections, according to a statement published on social media. They reported that they are working closely with several state authorities, including intelligence services.
"The police are investigating information related to the unauthorized use of EU funds for political activities. They are also examining the financing of legal entities and individuals from abroad in connection with possible attempts to influence the political situation in Slovakia," the statement said. It added that, following recent media reports, the scope of the investigation has been expanded to include potential foreign interference in the lead-up to Slovakia's 2023 parliamentary elections, allegedly involving the United Kingdom.
On Tuesday (July 29), the Slovak prime minister claimed that the UK Foreign Office had paid so-called influencers through a media agency to influence the 2023 Slovak parliamentary elections – allegedly to the detriment of Smer-SD and in favour of Progressive Slovakia (PS). He referred to an article published on the portal marker.sk.
The British Embassy has pledged to clarify its activities related to the 2023 Slovak elections. The information is expected to be provided in August. Slovakia will then assess the UK’s response and decide on further action.
