Government welcomes EU–US trade deal

The European Union and the United States have agreed to a new transatlantic trade deal, setting a 15-percent import tariff on most EU exports to the U.S., including cars, semiconductors, and pharmaceuticals.

The agreement, announced Sunday by US President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, averts a previously threatened 30-percent tariff hike.

As part of the deal, the EU will purchase $750 billion in American energy and invest another $600 billion in the US, including in military equipment.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) welcomed the deal and praised Slovak EU Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič for leading the negotiations. But Fico cautioned that Slovakia would monitor how the energy and defence commitments are implemented.

Šefčovič said the deal offers predictability and strengthens transatlantic cooperation. European Council President António Costa called it a success that would enhance EU competitiveness.
