Environment Minister addresses UN, calls for nuclear energy parity and rethinking green policies

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Environment of the Slovak Republic, Tomáš Taraba (SNS nominee), during his visit to the United States on Tuesday (July 22), spoke at the United Nations Security Council as well as at the UN General Assembly. At both forums, he defined respect for international agreements and peaceful conflict resolution as fundamental features of Slovak foreign policy. He also met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, according to the Ministry of the Environment’s communications department.

Taraba also spoke at a conference organized by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and held talks with the president of the UN Economic and Social Council, Robert Rae. The main topic was support for sustainable development and the competitiveness of economies.

Taraba called on countries around the world to rationally reassess the green transformation of economies, which, according to him, offers no benefit in several areas other than increasing costs and reducing competitiveness. He also stressed the necessity for states to be able to choose the energy mix that best suits them.

“Slovakia is an industrial country. No solar or wind farms can support the consumption needs of industry. That’s why it’s essential that nuclear power be granted the same status as renewable sources. We need electricity at competitive prices,” Taraba explained.

The Deputy Prime Minister also spoke at the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and held a bilateral meeting with Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Economy and Planning, Faisal bin Fadhil Alibrahim, with whom he discussed opportunities for joint investments in infrastructure projects.

Taraba will continue his working visit in the USA in the coming days. He is set to travel to Washington, where he will hold talks with the leadership of the American company Westinghouse.
