A working group is to be established in connection with electoral legislation. This was stated to TASR by the coalition party Smer-SD in response to comments by Speaker of Parliament Richard Raši (Hlas-SD) regarding a debate on removing the single electoral district provision from the Constitution of the Slovak Republic.
“There is a promise to set up a working commission that would address electoral legislation,” Ľubica Končalová from Smer-SD’s press department told TASR when asked whether the party is willing to discuss removing the single electoral district from the constitution. The coalition party SNS has already stated that it considers this topic irrelevant and will not support the removal, as it believes doing so would eliminate smaller political parties.
Hlas-SD advocated for the removal of the single electoral district provision as part of a constitutional amendment. However, the proposal did not receive sufficient support in Parliament, not even from the coalition. Raši hopes that an agreement will eventually be reached and the sentence will be removed from the constitution. The provision stating that Slovakia forms a single electoral district for parliamentary elections was added during the previous government’s term. Raši emphasized that removing the clause would not bring immediate changes to the electoral system, but would open the door for a broader debate on the topic.
