Identical triplets were recently born at the Children's Faculty Hospital in Košice—a medical rarity with odds of just one in 100 million births, the hospital announced on Tuesday.
The three girls—Sara (2,200g), Ester (1,660g), and Livia (1,800g)—were delivered by Caesarean section in the 33rd week of pregnancy in late June. Despite being born prematurely, all three have shown remarkable progress. “Each of them has gained nearly 400 grams in just four weeks and continues to thrive, bringing joy to their parents and our staff,” the hospital shared on social media.
Their 33-year-old mother, Petronela, is currently breastfeeding and caring for the babies under the supervision of the hospital’s neonatal and rehabilitation team.
The hospital explained that identical triplets occur naturally when a single fertilized egg splits into two, and then one of those splits again, resulting in three embryos with identical DNA, the same sex, and often a very similar appearance.
