Officials honored Štefánik on the 145th anniversary of his birth

Prime Minister Robert Fico marked the 145th anniversary of Milan Rastislav Štefánik’s birth by calling him a lasting symbol of inspiration and national pride. He urged the public to reflect on Štefánik’s legacy, calling him a patriot whose actions still resonate in today’s uncertain times.

Several ministers echoed this view, describing Štefánik as a model of courage and service. Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok praised his determination and dedication to Slovak sovereignty, while Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár highlighted his diplomatic impact. Culture Minister Martina Šimkovičová emphasized plans to install a Štefánik bust in Rome, and Finance Minister Ladislav Kamenický noted his humble beginnings. Agriculture Minister Richard Takáč added that Štefánik “lived his patriotism” through deeds, not words.

Štefánik was a key founder of Czechoslovakia and a major figure in Slovak history. Born in 1880, he was a diplomat, soldier, and WWI pilot who helped establish the republic in 1918. He died in a plane crash near Bratislava in 1919 at age 39. His legacy is honored each year on May 4th.
