Opposition party Progressive Slovakia (PS) has called on Prime Minister Robert Fico to support a complete EU ban on Russian steel imports on Monday. MEP and European Parliament Vice President Martin Hojsík argued this would benefit Slovakia’s steel industry—particularly U.S. Steel Košice—and reduce reliance on Russian resources. Despite sanctions, current EU quotas still allow nearly 3.2 million tons of Russian steel, close to Slovakia’s annual production.
Hojsík stressed that EU production capacity is sufficient and warned that Russian steel now accounts for 60% of Europe’s imported supply—more than before the war in Ukraine. MP Štefan Kišš from the same party (PS) added that stricter limits would boost eastern Slovakia’s economy and pressure Russia, claiming the government talks about peace but takes no real action to speed up the end of the war in Ukraine.
