President Peter Pellegrini was informed about the negotiations between Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) and the EU on the 18th package of anti-Russian sanctions. This was stated on the social network by the Office of the President of the Slovak Republic in response to statements by junior coalition SNS party Chairman Andrej Danko that the Slovak head of state should have fought more with the Prime Minister in Brussels for Slovak national energy interests. Pellegrini supports the Prime Minister in his efforts to negotiate the best possible conditions for Slovakia.
The opposition welcomes Friday's approval of a new 18th package of sanctions against Russia. At the same time, it criticises Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) for blocking the adoption of these sanctions for several weeks and linking the vote to the issue of the planned end of Russian gas imports to the European Union (EU).
