Today marks 145 years since the birth of Milan Rastislav Štefánik — one of the key founders of Czechoslovakia and a major figure in Slovak history. Born in 1880, Štefánik was a diplomat, soldier, and astronomer who played a crucial role in establishing the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918.
He served as a French military pilot during World War I and helped form Czechoslovak legions abroad. Štefánik died in a plane crash near Bratislava in 1919 at just 39 years old. His legacy is honored every year in Slovakia on May 4th, the anniversary of his death.
