EU criticises Slovakia over EU funds mismanagement

The European Parliament’s Budgetary Control Committee issued a critical report accusing Slovakia of failing to protect EU funds and undermining democratic oversight. The report was presented by Czech MEP Tomáš Zdechovský on Tuesday following a fact-finding mission to Slovakia in May.

It highlights a dramatic drop in indictments for serious economic crimes to just two so far in 2025 – a result of the abolition of the Special Prosecutor’s Office. Moreover, Slovakia’s Agricultural Paying Agency was criticised for ignoring EU anti-fraud tools, leading to ineffective oversight and subsidy abuse.

The findings have triggered investigations by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office and European Anti-Fraud Office. Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) has dismissed the report as politically motivated, calling Zdechovský a “political assassin.”
