Slovak MEP Ľubica Karvašová (Progressive Slovakia) has criticised the government for failing to present a clear plan to help the town of Gelnica recover from last week’s severe windstorm. She noted that, even after a week, no concrete strategy for recovery has been announced, despite the availability of EU funds.
During a visit to Gelnica, Karvašová met with the mayor and viewed damage to cultural sites and homes. She called the promised €1,500 for some residents insufficient and labelled it “shameful” that citizens were left to raise recovery funds themselves in the absence of government ministers.
In response, Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok (HLAS) rejected claims of inaction, saying officials had visited the region promptly.
