The trial of Juraj Cintula – accused of shooting Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in May – opened Tuesday at the Specialised Criminal Court in Banská Bystrica.
Prime Minister Fico, who was seriously injured in the attack, has stated he forgives Cintula. Cintula’s lawyer, David Lindtner, described Cintula as a victim and a product of aggressive media narratives and opposition propaganda, blaming the media for contributing to rising political tensions in Slovakia.
Cintula, a pensioner, is charged with committing a terrorist attack against a protected official and faces a potential life sentence. Prime Minister Fico is not expected to testify.
