Slovakia lacks an effective solution for industrial waste from sectors like construction and automotive, with over a million tons ending up in landfills each year, warns the Republican Union of Employers (RÚZ). Modern incineration plants could help, but public scepticism about their safety remains high. Slovakia is falling short of both national and EU waste targets and lags behind Western countries in recycling infrastructure.
The Republican Union of Employers is calling for faster permitting and environmental assessments that protect nature without blocking investment. Slovnaft, the country’s largest refinery, stresses that waste should be seen as a resource — not just a burden — and warns that without major changes and technological upgrades, Slovakia will struggle to meet EU waste regulations by 2035.
