Greenpeace stages ice protest over climate inaction in Slovakia

Greenpeace Slovakia has called on Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba (SNS) to urgently address the climate crisis, demanding the drafting of a climate law, adaptation measures, and stronger support for renewable energy.

To draw attention to the inaction of the Environment Minister and to the current heatwave, the activists set up a life-size ice sculpture of Minister Taraba in front of the Environment Ministry in Bratislava. The sculpture was meant to symbolise what Greenpeace sees as his “melting” credibility amid rising temperatures, signalled Dorota Osvaldová of the organisation at a briefing on Thursday.

Greenpeace criticised Taraba for ignoring the climate emergency and undermining EU climate efforts, including the Green Deal. They urged cooperation with experts and the Economy Ministry to remove barriers to renewable energy and promote energy communities.

In response, the Environment Ministry accused Greenpeace of pursuing media stunts and claimed Slovakia is not to blame for the global climate crisis. It also defended its record, pointing to €750 million from EU funds invested in water and nature protection projects under Taraba’s leadership.
