Slovakia falls behind on climate project plans and financing

Slovakia is lagging in both planning and financing climate protection projects. This applies to areas such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting watercourses, and implementing flood prevention measures. According to Ľubomír Andrassy, President of the Supreme Audit Office (NKÚ), the consequences of global warming threaten the property and lives of citizens in an inconspicuous, creeping manner – much more than other security risks.

The Supreme Audit Office states in its report that Slovakia and other Central European countries are already experiencing the negative effects of climate change, particularly in the form of falling groundwater levels, drying streams, and the expansion of areas affected by extreme drought. National audit offices therefore consider drought and water resource protection to be strategic priorities to which governments, parliaments, and civil society should pay increased attention.

Global economic losses due to damage caused by extreme weather in 2024 exceeded two trillion euros.
